The obelisk in the center of the Place de la Concorde came from Luxor in 1829,
a gift from the vice king of Egypt. Initially it marked the entrance
of the Amon temple, palace of Ramses III.

Cut from a single block of pink granite, it is twenty-three meters high;
the top was covered in gold in the 1990s,
as it was originally in Ancient Egypt
